GERALD G. WILLIAMS

Gerald Glynn Williams, a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Marine Corps, died Dec. 10, 1994 at home. Colonel Williams was born on Sept. 4, 1916 in Holmes County, Fla., the son of the late Arthur Lee Williams and Irma Belyeu Williams. He spent most of his early life in Jackson County, Fla. When he completed high school and after becoming 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps from which he won a competitive appointment to enter the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated with the class of 1940.

When the U.S. entered World War II, then Second Lieutenant Williams was attending U.S. Army Signal Corps Schools, Fort Monmouth, N.J., studying the operation and use of radar equipment. When he was overseas during the war he served on the staff of the CGV Amphibious Corps FMF and then the CG Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, until the end of hostilities.

He then returned to the continental United States where he served in a number of Army, Navy and Marine Corps staffs, including that of the commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Atlantic Command.

In 1953, he became a battalion commander in the Second Marine Division, FMF, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. In 1955, Colonel Williams became Commanding Officer, Marine Barracks, U.S. Naval Base, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. After returning to the United States he held staff assignments at Camp Pendleton, Calif. and NAB Little Creek, Va.

Upon retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps he joined Wheat, First Securities Inc. He remained with this company for 25 years where he became a vice president.

During his military service, Colonel Williams was awarded the Bronze Star medal with Combat ``V,'' the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal with Fleet Clasps, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Korean Victory Medal.

Colonel Williams attended Larchmont United Methodist Church in Norfolk and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Jackson County, Fla. He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club, Arlington, Va. and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. He was a former member of the Virginia Club and a charter member of the Harbor Club. Additionally, he was formerly a member of the Norfolk Midtown Kiwanis Club and served as its president. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Carabao.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son, G. Glynn Williams Jr. of Norfolk; his brother, Arthur L. Williams Jr. and nephew, Arthur L. Williams III, both of Graceville, Fla.; and niece, Louise Williams Ross of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.

A memorial service conducted by Dr. Lewis H. Morgan will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1994 at 4 p.m. at Larchmont United Methodist Church, Norfolk. Interment will be in Florida. Donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Larchmont United Methodist Church, Norfolk, or to Salem United Methodist Church, Graceville, Fla. 32440. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
