BEACH MAN CHRISTENS BOAT BY HELPING LAND A 203-POUND BIGEYE

Ray Curry of Richmond helped his friend Jim Scully of Virginia Beach christen his new 52-foot Buddy Davis sportfishing yacht in grand fashion Saturday.

Fishing just south of Norfolk Canyon, 60 miles east of Virginia Beach, they combined to catch a 203 3/4-pound bigeye tuna, one of the biggest tuna of any species caught by a Virginia boat this season.

Curry manned the rod and Scully ran the boat during the two-hour battle. The trip also produced seven yellowfin tuna between 25 and 35 pounds.

Scully, owner of Fisherman's Wharf Marina at Rudee Inlet, took delivery of the boat, named the Water Witch, about two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, Rob Dearnley of Newport News won a striped bass tournament Saturday out of the Marina at Marina Shores on Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach. His winning catch weighed 30 pounds. The contest was sponsored by the marina and J&B Custom Rods.

The team of Craig Owens of Chesapeake and Jim Banks of Virginia Beach won a largemouth bass tournament Sunday out of Bob's Fishing Hole on the Northwest River. Their combined catch weighed 13 1/2 pounds.

Otherwise, striped bass provided most action for Virginia anglers during the past week, although Sunday was a lost day for most striper fishermen.

There was an unconfirmed report of a 58-inch striper caught in the lower bay.

If the report is true, the fish probably weighed between 55 and 60 pounds, making it the largest in the state this season.

However, confirmation failed to develop in spite of calls to virtually all South Hampton Roads weighing stations for the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. by CNB
