The N.C. Board of Transportation has awarded a $557,261 contract to a Tarboro firm to improve 3.7 miles of Ocean Boulevard and Colington road (S.R. 1217) south of the First Flight Airport near Kill Devil Hills.
The contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Co. at a board meeting in Raleigh.
The contract calls for upgrading the roadway and improving drainage from Croatan Highway (U.S. 158 Bypass) to just west of Coleton Lane.
R.V. Owens II of Nags Head, who represents Dare County on the board, said work is expected to begin Jan. 2.
During construction, safeguards will be taken to protect small streams and wetlands from contamination by soil or construction materials. Grass will be planted to cover bare ground caused by construction, Owens said.
Work on the project is scheduled for completion in May. by CNB
