It may have happened while an electrical engineer was splitting firewood for a family in need, or while a lineman helped an at-risk student with her homework or while a customer service agent winterized an elderly neighbor's home.
The exact hour or deed is unclear, but this month North Carolina Power employees achieved one million hours of volunteer service to their communities.
``One million volunteer hours is a significant milestone,'' said Eva S. Teig, North Carolina Power's vice president-public affairs. ``But the real meaning of our program lies in the spirit of service and giving shown by our employees in countless ways in the small towns, big cities and rural areas we service in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia.
``In recognizing this accomplishment,'' she added, ``I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank our employees for all they do to help others.''
Company employees have given one million hours of their time through involvement in more than 15,000 volunteer projects since North Carolina Power's corporate volunteer program began 10 years ago. In 1989, the program was recognized by the White House with a President's Volunteer Action Award. by CNB
