Ruffner chief gets tech award
Pamela Hoffler-Riddick, first-year principal at Ruffner Middle School, has nabbed an award for her work in integrating technology into the school's curriculum.
WHRO and the Consortium for Interactive Technology presented this year's C.I.I. Administrator of the Year award at the 10th annual Technology in Education conference last month in Norfolk.
Hoffler-Riddick was cited for the school's ``outstanding thematic interdisciplinary curriculum'' that has been ``greatly enhanced by an impressive use of technology.'' Recently, she secured funding to pilot an interactive television project that will be directed to the homes of selected students.
Student wins recognition
LaToya Mason, a Norview High School junior, was presented the Corbin White Distinguished Student award last week by the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Norfolk Resident Organization.
The award is presented annually to an outstanding young person who lives in one of Norfolk's public housing communities. The honor came with a plaque and $100 from White, a former housing authority commissioner.
Mason, 16, is an honor student at Norview and is involved in volunteer work in her church and community. Several days a week she tutors fourth- and fifth-graders at the Bowling Green Recreation Center.
Mason was one of nine students nominated for exemplifying community and family values. Other nominees were: Aisha Durham of Lake Taylor High; Sylvia Wilson of Lafayette-Winona Middle; Kamilah Ferebee of Norview High; Larry Miller of Booker T. Washington; Percy L. Price of Norview High; Philron Lee of Ruffner Middle; April Reyes of Azalea Gardens Middle, and Tarea Freeman of Norview High. by CNB
