DUCKPINS: The field in the Portsmouth Match Game Duckpin Championship at Victory Lanes will be reduced to the 16 money winners on Sunday.

Competition is scheduled at 6 p.m. instead of the usual 5 p.m. start due to the Christmas party of the Victory Youth League. Two matches will be at 6:30 p.m.

Eleven matches are scheduled. One bowler, Paul Wetherbee Sr., already has gained the semifinal round of the winners' bracket, posting a victory over Ray Ketchum Sunday.

In losers' bracket matches on Sunday, Dennis Long eliminated Leoma Mehalic, 162-135; David Leffler ousted Lee Coup, 168-166; Don Ferguson topped Carl Ketchum, 171-160; Bill Ellsworth defeated Ann Sharrett, 173-133; Eddie Williams downed Butch Warren, 144-138; Ronnie Ketchum bested Bill Leffler, 161-132; Terrye Bradshaw edged Christy Mattern, 146-132; and Jason Coup won by forfeit over Sandy Chiera.

In winners' bracket matches this Sunday Donnie Long meets Paul Wetherbee Jr., Barbara Turner opposes Bobby Wetherbee and David Leffler faces Charlie Oakley.

In losers' bracket matches at 6 p.m. it will be Jason Coup vs. Martha Rush, Ronnie Ketchum vs. Troy Tippin, Terrye Bradshaw vs. Paul Sandefur, Dennis Long vs. Tim Kirkpatrick, Eddie Williams vs. Wayne Haddock, David Leffler vs. Leona Lee and Don Ferguson vs. Carl Ketchum.

At 6:30 p.m. it will be Rush vs. Ellsworth and Leffler vs. Oakley.

After Sunday the tournament will pause until Jan. 8 when the surviving bowlers commence their drive for the 16 prizes. The tournament winner will get $300.

SAT COURSE: A 12-hour preparatory course for athletes who are planning to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test will be offered at Tidewater Community College's Portsmouth campus in February.

The course is $60 and will be from 9 a.m. until noon on the Saturdays of Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25. For information, call 484-2121, ext. 396.

COLLEGE GRANTS: The National Sports Foundation will provide information on the availability of college athletic scholarships for both male and female high school athletes.

``Many athletes are unaware that over 100,000 collegiate athletic scholships are available,'' said Joe Tirrell of the National Sports Foundation. ``Many students are not aware that they can qualify. Millions of valuable dollars go unused.''
