ANY DAY

IMAGINE DANTE'S ``Inferno'' with a happy ending.

No doubt, the IMAX film ``Fires of Kuwait'' is akin to taking a trip to Hades. Filmed in fall 1991 in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf war, the 36-minute movie opens today at the Virginia Air and Space Center's IMAX Theater.

A wide-angle camera lens follows firefighters as they struggle through great black plumes of smoke to fiery oil wells dotting Kuwait's char-broiled landscape. By journey's end, the sky clears and there are heroes to applaud.

The film will be shown daily through March at 1 and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday; also at 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday. Admission is $4 to $5.50. The center is at 600 Settlers Landing Road in downtown Hampton. Call 727-0900.

TONIGHT

IF YOU'RE of the opinion that it's not Christmas without a little good rock 'n' roll, you might want to stay away from the Tommy and the Bulldozers show tonight at the Boathouse.

Except that the band, led by WNOR-FM (FM99) morning-show personalities Tommy Griffiths and Henry ``The Bull'' Del Toro, is playing for a good cause. The pair's third annual ``Christmas Is for Kids'' party gives fans a chance to help disadvantaged and terminally ill children. (Profits from the current ``Worst of Tommy and the Bull'' CD are earmarked for the same purpose. It's available at Blockbuster Music stores.)

Also appearing at the concert, which begins at 8 p.m., are Sea of Souls and Norman & Sammy Harrell. Admission is one new, unwrapped toy.

SATURDAY

'TWAS THE FORTNIGHT before Christmas, and all through the house the call resounded: ``I pity the fool mouse that stirs!'' As unlikely as this may seem, gold-chained supporting actor Mr. T will narrate a children's concert by the Virginia Symphony Saturday at 2 p.m at Chrysler Hall, Norfolk. T, known for his roles in ``Rocky III'' and ``The A-Team,'' is in town as a spokesman for Operation Blessing, the humanitarian service of the Christian Broadcasting Network. He will share conducting duties with music director JoAnn Falletta. Tickets: $7 children, $10 adults. 671-8100.

TONIGHT

JIM CARREY returns in a film that promises to ``add startling depth to the dense and shallow- minded.'' Spurred on by the phenomenal successes of ``Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'' (which critics liked) and ``The Mask'' (which coasted) these guys even brag about being brainless. The flick is called ``Dumb and Dumber,'' with Carrey and his roommate, played by Jeff Daniels, on a cross-country trip trying to return a briefcase full of cash to its rightful owner. Every day is a no-brainer as they thwart kidnappers, truckers and cops. Carrey's energy is infectious but it's just a matter of time until we get tired of him. Has that time come?
