POWERLIFTERS PRESS WEIGHT USING THE SCHWARTZ FORMULA

Notes from around the Beach:

PUMPED UP AT PRINCESS ANNE: Powerlifters came to the gym pumped and ready to press huge amounts of weight on Nov. 12. They succeeded.

John Boyette, a powerlifter himself, works in the Princess Anne Anne Recreation Center athletics department and hosted the event.

Boyette said the competition utilized the Schwartz Formula. He described the system, in terms of kilograms and co-efficients. Suffice to say, that the less one weighs and the more one lifts, the better one scores.

The top finishers were as follows:

Teenage division - 1. Noel Ray, 2. Phil Dupre.

Women - 1. April Main, 2. Susan Nickolite.

Men - 1. Curtis Joachim, 2. Lou DiCioccio

Masters (35-over) - 1. Tyrone Johnson

The Princess Anne Recreation center will stay hot with its version of the Winter Olympics.

These games will be just like the real thing. There will be opening ceremonies, lighting of the torch, participants will be assigned to represent different countries, and, even better, these Olympics won't clutter your television for hours every night.

Events include ping pong, two-man bobsled and four-man luge (not a typo), basketball, 8-ball pool tournament, floor hockey, volleyball, handball, badminton and relay races. Awards and sportsmanship trophies will be presented at the closing ceremonies.

The games will run from Dec. 28 through Dec. 30; from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. For ages 8-17. Facility card or day pass required. Sign up at center athletics office by Dec. 23 or call 426-0022.

Hoops at Kempsville: A Youth Basketball Tournament for boys 10-12 at the Kempsville Community Recreation Center will be held Dec. 17-18.

The cost is $65 per team with a 12-team limit. The teams will play a round-robin format on Saturday. Each team is guaranteed at least three games on Saturday and the top eight will advance to Sunday's single-elimination championship round.

Facility card/day pass required for both days. Call 474-8492.

Linking up: Phil Stewart has been head golf professional at Bow Creek Golf Course for five years. But as of Oct. 1, Stewart added some responsibilities to his job description - taking on similar duties at Kempsville Greens and Red Wing Lake - the city's other courses.

Stewart brings impressive credentials to the daunting task. Besides a great golf name, he has been a PGA professional for 15 years. Stewart played golf at Princess Anne High School with the Strange twins, Curtis and Alan. You may have heard of Curtis Strange if you follow golf.

Stewart played at Virginia Tech, where the Hokies won the team State Intercollegiate Title all four years he was there. He won the individual championship as senior in 1977.

GREAT NECK GIRLS HOOPS: The Kings Grant Dominators failed to do what their name implies at the Youth Basketball Tournament for Girls Dec. 10-11, at the Great Neck Community Recreation Center gym - but they managed to win the affair.

Although the Dominators were one of three teams to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record, they won the title based on a points-scored, points-allowed tiebreaker. The Linkhorn Stars and the Kings Grant Monarchs also finished 2-1.

The Dominators enjoyed a 73 points scored against 47 points allowed weekend. The Stars went 72-56; the Monarchs, 51-47.

The tournament all-stars consisted of MVP Jamie Todd of the Dominators, Janie Larned and Laura Machaj of the Monarchs, Jessica Jones of the Stars and Amber Newell of the Woodstock TNT. by CNB
