The United States is facing a revolution as huge changes unfold in the nature of business, government and politics, the chairman-elect of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Thursday.
Americans are demanding fewer taxes and mandates, less government and more private-sector involvement in problem-solving, said Dennis W. Sheehan as he prepared to address the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.
``Government's gotten overexuberant, oversized and overweight,'' he said. ``It's time to go on a diet.''
Sheehan is the chairman and president of AXIA Inc., a private manufacturer of commercial and industrial products based in Oak Brook, Ill. He served as vice chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1994 to 1995 and will become chairman of the 2,200-member group in February 1995.
Governors, rather than Congress, have shown leadership in issues pertinent to Americans' lives, because they act as chief executives of their states, he said Thursday.
Sheehan predicted that Hampton Roads will benefit from the activity that the North American Free Trade Agreement will generate for the area's port.
``This is the last undeveloped area in the Northeast corridor,'' he said. ``It has the highest concentration of technological and manufacturing talent on the face of the world.'' by CNB
