TOURNAMENTS TO OFFER $35,000 IN PRIZES

Area bowlers will be competing for more than $35,000 in the upcoming annual city tenpin tournaments.

Entry forms are out for the annual Norfolk Bowling Association and Tidewater Women's Bowling Association tournaments. The Portsmouth Women's Association will have its applications out shortly.

The Norfolk Bowling Association, which serves bowlers at 20 centers across South Hampton Roads, added funds to its tournament last year and offered a record payoff of $35,000. The prizes in the two women's tournaments exceeded $15,000.

The 41st annual NBA tourney will be held at two Virginia Beach centers. Pinboy's at the Beach will be the site for team competition. Singles and doubles will be bowled at Plaza Bowl.

The NBA reserved entry deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 18. If the field is not full, final entries will be accepted until Jan. 25.

The tournament is scheduled over four weekends beginning Feb. 11.

``We are looking for about 1,000 bowlers,'' said NBA secretary Pres Carraway. ``That's about one-tenth of our overall membership.''

Last year, the tourney drew nearly 1,000 with 810 competing in individual events and 209 four-bowler teams. Some bowlers competed individually and not on teams and others only with teams.

The 38th annual TWBA tournament will be three weekends starting Feb. 4-5. Two Norfolk centers are the sites. Pinboy's of Military will host the teams. Singles and doubles will be at Pinboy's of Norfolk.

Entry deadline is Jan. 15.

The Portsmouth Women's Association tournament will be held at Scott Center Strike Zone at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

It will be a two-weekend event starting March 4-5. Teams will bowl on Saturdays at noon and 3 p.m. Individual events will start Sundays at 3 p.m.

Entries will close on Feb. 1.

This will be the 32nd annual PWBA tournament and the second year it has been held at Scott Center.
