Wade J. Proffitt, 70, a native of Asheville, N.C., and a Peninsula resident for the past 45 years, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 1994. Mr. Proffitt retired in 1987 as owner of Proffitt's Chevron. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II, and was a former POW.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline D. Proffitt; five sons, William J. Proffitt, Johnny D. Proffitt, Larry K. Proffitt, James J. Proffitt, all of Newport News, and Richard S. Proffitt of Virginia Beach; a stepson, William C. Dawson of New Orleans; two sisters, Belle Proffitt and Annie Ballard; two brothers, Dave Proffitt and Goldman Proffitt, all of Asheville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Parisher. Interment in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday evening in Peninsula Funeral Home.
