WILLIAM H. ELEY

William Herman Eley, 78, of (NU)101B Forest Pine Apts., died Dec. 17, 1994, at Riverside Convalescent Center, Saluda.

He was a native of Franklin and was the son of the late John L. and Pauline Lankford Eley. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and training union director. He was also a long-time member of the Church's Bruner Bible Class.

A former funeral director, Mr. Eley had retired from Southampton Supply Co. in Franklin, and recently retired as a magistrate of the 5th Judicial District for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was a member of the American Legion Post (NU)73, past member and former president of the Forks of the River Ruritan Club, and a member of the Forks of the River Hunt Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marie Morgan Eley; two daughters, Jayne E. Savage of Urbanna and Jan E. Sloan and her husband, Jim, of Winchester; one son, Rev. William H. Eley II and his wife, Joy, of Elberon; one brother, Jasper Eley of Jackson, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Art, Chuck, Jennifer, and Mike Savage, Justin and Jessica Sloan, and Joshua and Ashley Eley; two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Brittany Savage. He was preceded in death by by two brothers, John L. Eley Jr., and Clyde Eley; and two sisters, Pauline Elizabeth Eley and a sister Annie, who died in infancy.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Home. The burial will be at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to either the Southampton County Sheriff's Dept. or the City of Franklin Police Dept.
