The Rev. Cornelius Purkett, 61, of the 2900 block of Myrtle Ave., died Dec. 17, 1994, in Norfolk.
The Rev. Purkett, born in Plymouth, N.C., was pastor and a member of Garden of Prayer 3 COGIC, Norfolk, and Eastern Star COGIC in Elizabeth City. He had been a pastor for 31 years. He was second administrative assistant to Bishop L.E. Willis - Third Jurisdiction - Va. He was a member of Tidewater Ministers Fellowship and was former district superintendent of the Windsor, N.C. District. He was a life member of the NAACP. He was predeceased by his parents, Susie Gaylord Purkett and Bishop H.L. Purkett.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Heckstall Purkett; a daughter, Angela Lynn Purkett; three sisters, Virginia P. Gorham, Edith Bell and Alice Hoggard; seven brothers, the Rev. Taft Purkett, the Rev. Herbert J. Purkett, Benjamin Purkett, the Rev. Eugene Purkett, William Purkett, Elijah Purkett and the Rev. James Gaylord; and several other relatives and friends and church family.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in Garden of Prayer Temple, Portsmouth, by Bishop L.E. Willis and Bishop LeRoy J. Woolard. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. T.E. Cooke-Twilight Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A wake will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Garden of Prayer 3 COGIC, 200 W. 28th St., Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the procession to the church on Thursday.
