Lt. Colonel John Adam Livingstone, USMC (Ret.), 63, of the 900 block of Hanover Ave., died Dec. 18, 1994, in a Norfolk hospital.
Lt. Colonel Livingstone was born in Melrose, Mass., and was a resident of Norfolk for 21 years. He graduated from Huntington Preparatory School in 1950 and Tufts University in 1954. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1977 after 22 years of service. His military career included service in Norway, Spain, Okinawa, and he was a veteran of the War in Vietnam.
In 1966 while in Vietnam he was personal assistant to Lieutenant General Lewis W. Walt, Commander Third Marine Amphibious Forces, selected for the Armed Forces Staff College, and graduated from this institution in 1968. In 1971-72 Colonel Livingstone commanded the First Battalion, Tenth Marine Regiment, an artillery unit, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. His awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with combat ``v'' and two bronze stars in lieu of repeat medals, Armed Forces Medal, National Defense Medal, republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with gold stars, and others.
In 1979 Colonel Livingstone earned a master's degree in Public Administration from Old Dominion University. Subsequently he served in various positions with the Newport News City government from 1983 to 1993, including the position of Acting Director, first in the Department of Development, and later in the Department of Planning and Development. His final position was that of Administrator for the Industrial Development Authority.
He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, the Retired Officers Association and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn White Livingstone; and three children, Deirdre L. Rategan, Alan Stewart Livingstone of Virginia Beach and Barbara J. Livingstone of Atlanta, Ga.; and one grandson, Ryan N. Rategan.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. J. Shepherd Russell. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
