A Norfolk man was arrested early Friday after he sexually assaulted a woman for four hours and then fell asleep in her bed, police said Monday. The assault happened while the suspect was free on bond in another sexual-assault case.
The man was identified as Rodney Conway, 26, of the 7400 block of Fenner St. He was charged with attempted rape, robbery, burglary, abduction and five counts of sodomy.
Norfolk police Sgt. Wayne McBride said Conway and the woman lived in the same apartment complex but not the same building.
Conway knocked on the woman's door about 1:30 a.m. Friday, police said. She did not know Conway and refused to open the door. He first told her through the closed door that she had left her car lights on, police said.
``He was using various stories trying to coax her to open the door,'' McBride said. ``Finally, when she wouldn't open the door, he forced it open.''
After Conway kicked down the door to her apartment, McBride said, the woman was defenseless. She was alone and had no telephone to try to call for help.
Conway, who was not armed, initially robbed her, taking money, her ATM card and her driver's license, police said.
He then physically assaulted her, made her disrobe and forced her into acts of sodomy over a four-hour period, police said. Conway finally fell asleep, and the woman was able to slip out of the apartment and call for help from a pay phone, police said.
When police arrived about 5:30 a.m., the man was still asleep in the bed. He was arrested after a struggle, police said.
Police spokesman Larry Hill said Conway had been free on $25,000 bond and was scheduled to be tried next month in a June 1993 case. ILLUSTRATION: Conway
