ELVIN C. WORRELL

Elvin Christopher ``Chris'' Worrell, 50, of Virginia Beach, a restaurateur and an avid sailing enthusiast, died Dec. 20, 1994.

A native of South Norfolk, now Chesapeake, Va., Chris graduated from Oscar Smith High School in 1962 and attended what is now Old Dominion University.

As oceanfront lifeguards in the early 1960s, he and his brother Mike went on to found the popular Worrell Bros. Restaurant on Atlantic Avenue in the resort area. In the late 1970s he purchased his brother's interest.

Often seen sailing his large catamaran sailboat off the oceanfront, Chris was also an advanced open water diver and pilot of his own experimental ultra-light type plane, which he kept in Mathews, Va.

He also held a USCG Master's License for sailing and auxiliary vessels under 50 tons, of which he was particularly proud, and was an active member of the United States Power Squadrons. He was a deputy sheriff in Chesapeake, Va., since 1970 and a member of the American Legion, having run the beachfront post on Laskin Road for a short period in the early 1970s.

He is survived by his wife of seven years, the former Carol Denise Jolly of Portsmouth, Va., and their two daughters, Chessy Denise and Catze Carol, and daughter, Mary Christina from his former marriage to Martha Bennett.

Also surviving are his brothers, A. Michael Worrell and Julian Hiter Worrell, and their mother, Frances K. Worrell.

Upon calm seas and fair skies his ashes will be returned to his beloved ocean within view of his home on Rudee Inlet.

A memorial service conducted by Louise Wilson, the former principal of Friends School, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach.

Family and friends will be at Worrell Bros. Restaurant immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends School at 1537 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
