OBITUARIES

VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Deborah J. Robertson, 34, of Country Club Circle, owner and president of Robertson Sensor Technologies, Inc., Ithaca, N.Y., died Dec. 19, 1994, in her residence.

She was born in Norfolk. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va., earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University in chemistry and was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity and the American Chemical Society.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Colonna Robertson and father, John M. Roberson Jr. of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jane Harrod and brother-in-law, Dan Harrod of Raleigh, N.C.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery, Temperanceville, Va., by Dr. Richard Keever. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, Va. 22314.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Clarence Simmons of the 3800 block of Betsy Crescent, died Dec. 16, 1994. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today in Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, in charge.

SUFFOLK - Marguerite Holm Parker, 88, of the 5800 block of Walden Road, died Dec. 18, 1994, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mrs. Parker, a native of Norfolk, was the widow of Harvey W. Parker. She was a member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church, Driver.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Denise Sherman; and great-grandson, John Howard Sherman both of Abernathy, Texas; and a nephew, Carl W. Ballance of Parksley, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, by the Rev. Garland Hines. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bennett's Creek Rescue Squad.

FRANKLIN - John D. ``Jack'' Francis, 88, formerly of Franklin, died Dec. 20, 1994, in Halifax Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

A native of Southampton County, he was the son of the late John W. and Laura Whitfield Francis. He was retired from Union Camp as a forklift operator in the roll-finishing department.

He is survived by a sister, Mattie F. Sodan of Mechanicsville, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mount Horeb Cemetery by the Rev. Pat B. Tony. The family will be at Holland-Rideout Funeral Home today from 7 to 8 p.m.

WAVERLY - Mabel Fronfelter Herbert, 90, died Dec. 20, 1994. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield.

BELLE HAVEN - Maude Evans Cutler of Nandua, died Dec. 20, 1994. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Cutler Family Cemetery on Nandua Creek. Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore, in charge.

CAMDEN - Ruby M. Greene, 85, of the 400 block of Whitehall Road, died Dec. 20, 1994. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City.

POPLAR BRANCH - Pinnell Owens Griggs, 83, of N.C. Highway 3, died Dec. 20, 1994. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City.

RICH SQUARE - George Pugh, 47, died Dec. 15, 1994. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. today in Branches Chapel, Rich Square.

HERTFORD - William Sutton, of Route 4, died Dec. 17, 1994. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Perquimans County High School. Stallings Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, in charge.

RALEIGH - William ``Bill'' Vogedes Jr., 73, died Dec. 19, 1994. A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in charge.

ELIZABETH CITY - Jewell Powell York, 74, of the 100 block of Bayberry Drive, died Dec. 20, 1994. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in New Hollywood Cemetery. Twiford's Northside Chapel in charge.

VIRGINIA

TROUTVILLE - Melvin Preston Armstrong, 85, died Monday, Dec. 19, 1994.

He was a retired chief engineer from Interstate Oil Transport Co. of New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife, Idella Simmons Armstrong; daughters, Vilas A. Secrist; grandchildren, Linda S. Dwyer and Roy P. Dwyer Jr., Kathy S. Freites and Sgt. Johnny Z. Freites; great-grandchildren, Sara Ann Freites, Charles Preston Freites and Jessica Caroline Dwyer; sisters and brother-in-law, Thelma L. Armstrong, Betty A. Long and W.A. Long, all of Richmond; brother and sister-in-law, James B. and Opal Armstrong, Richmond.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Dr. Robert G. Moore III officiating. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, with Pastor Frank Hughes officiating. Arrangements are by Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

ELSEWHERE

ELIZABETH, N.J. - Levi Beasley, 45, of the 100 block of Madison Ave., died Dec. 18, 1994.

Mr. Beasley, a native of Franklin was employed at Rampo College as a watch engineer until he became disabled.

Survivors include his father, Clarence Beasley of Franklin; four sisters, Beaunia Tubbs of East Orange, N.J., Christine Banks of Westwood, N.J., Doris Mullings of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Naomi Rogers of Lauderhill, Fla.; four brothers-in-law; five brothers, Herbert Beasley of Bronx, N.Y., Jessie and John Beasley of Irvington, N.J., Randolph Beasley of Vero Beach, Fla., and Kenneth Beasley of Franklin; five aunts; two uncles; 28 nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and other relatives.

A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin. A graveside service iwll be held in Southampton Memorial Cemetery, Franklin, at 11 a.m. Friday.
