OBITUARIES

CHESAPEAKE - Edward Francis ``Tim'' Kain, 66, of the 1900 block of Robert Hall Blvd., died Monday, Dec. 19, 1994, at home.

Mr. Kain, a native of Maryland, was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a machinist.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. by Dr. L. Wilbur Kersey in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Foster Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

NORFOLK - Leroy Purdy, of the 1300 block of Bolton St., died Dec. 17, 1994. A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Macedonia Holiness Church. Graves Funeral Home in charge.

NORFOLK - Willie Mae ``Teny'' Whitehurst, of the 2400 block of Virginia Beach Blvd., died Dec. 16, 1994, in a Norfolk hospital.

She was born in Norfolk and was a retired elevator operator for the Wainwright Building. Willie Mae was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, the Usher Board and was active in the Sunday School class. She participated in the Salvation Army Home League, the Civic League and Missionaries at the Cogic Apartment Unit until her illness prevented her participation.

Survivors include one son, Earl Whitehurst III; a grandson, Earl Whitehurst IV; a cousin, Mary C. Parks; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today in Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. John Foster, Pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. The funeral procession will leave from the lobby of the Cogic apartment building. The body may be viewed before the funeral service at the church.

PORTSMOUTH - Josephine Harris Branch, 82, of the 300 block of Kay Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1994, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Miss Branch, a native of Lawrenceville, Va., was a member of Park View United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sister, Marion Ferrel of Durham, N.C.; four nephews, Kenneth B. Yarbrough of Portsmouth, Edwin B. Yarbrough of New Bern, N.C., Dr. John Branch of Oakland, Calif., and Otis Ferrel of Durham, N.C.; and one niece, Janice Branch of Takoma Park, Md.

A graveside funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. John A. Bright. The family will receive friends at Foster Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.

PORTSMOUTH - Venoy Rex ``Buck'' Dixon, 81, of One Crawford Parkway, died Dec. 20, 1994, in Washington, N.C.

Mr. Dixon, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a quarterman welder. He was a member of Green Acres Presbyterian Church; Portsmouth Elks Lodge (NU)82; and was an Army veteran. He was the widower of Irene Virginia ``Pat'' Dixon.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Betsy Anne and Thomas Stearns of Bath, N.C.; two grandsons, Kevin Stearns and Barry Stearns; a granddaughter, Kyle Stearns, all of Bath; and a sister, Marjorie Whyte of Shreveport, La.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Walter C. Hunting. Foster Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

PORTSMOUTH - Leonard T. Johnson, 78, of the 3300 block of Armstead Drive, died Dec. 18, 1994. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church. Corprew Funeral Home in charge.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Cmdr. Stanley W. Birch Jr. (Ret.), passed away quietly on Dec. 17, 1994, in Chesapeake.

Originally from Massachusetts, he lived the majority of his life in Tidewater. He graduated from Brown Unversity in 1948 and was commissioned in the U.S. Navy. After retiring in 1974, he taught math in the City of Hampton for 11 years. After retiring a second time, he continued to pursue his love of travel.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Tucker Birch; a son, David Roper Birch of Whidby Island, Wash.; three daughters, Carol B. Boelke of Alexandria, Anne B. Pierce of Fredericksburg and Margaret Birch of Annandale; a sister, Nancy S. Birch of Brunswick, Maine; two brothers, John W. Birch and Barry A. Birch, both of Belmont, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, 739 Yarmouth St. (on the Hague). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Network, 660 Tamiami Trail N., Suite 37, Naples, Fla., 33940.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Ben Gorelick, 80, of Virginia Beach, a retired supermarket manager with various stores in the Tidewater area for 25 years, died Dec. 18, 1994, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

Mr. Gorelick was born in Chicago, Ill. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Gorelick is survived by his wife, Ruby L. Gorelick; a daughter, Pamela Jo Tyler and her husband, Stephen of Waldorf, Md.; two sons, Michael B. Gorelick and his wife, Barbara of Vacaville, Calif. and Joel S. Gorelick and his wife, Sylvia of Newport News; and four grandsons.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by Rabbi Samuel Sobel. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Sara N. Marcus, 84, of the 6400 block of Auburn Drive, died Dec. 20, 1994, in Virginia Beach.

Mrs. Marcus was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. and former resident of Silver Spring, Md. She was the widow of Sam Marcus and a member of Hadassah and B'Nai B'rith Women.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce M. Salzberg of Norfolk; a son, Martin Marcus of Potomac, Md.; two brothers, Dave Goldvarg of Silver Spring and Ralph Goldvarg of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in B'Nai Israel Cemetery in Oxon Hill, Md. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Israel in Norfolk or to the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is in charge of arrangements.
