IT'S A HIT with the critics, and with Bill Clinton.
It's chunky sorbet, a frozen confection from RealFruit Co. of Woburn, Mass. Unlike traditional sorbet, this version includes pieces of fruit or bits of peel in a smooth base.
This simple idea has garnered praise from food editors around the country such as Bev Bennett of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Like our office tasters, she was impressed with the sharp, not sugary, flavors, according to Food Business magazine.
Even the president himself likes RealFruit.
``The chunky peach is the president's favorite, says Timothy Kerwin, chief flight attendant on Air Force One. ``He asks for it just about every time we fly.''
It's a good thing, too.
RealFruit chunky sorbet is fat- and cholesterol-free. A 4-ounce serving contains 90 calories, compared to 110 for most sherbets or more than 140 for most ice creams.
RealFruit sorbet is available in eight other flavors including lemon peel, cranberry-orange, red raspberry and mandarin pineapple.
A spokeswoman for RealFruit says you'll find the sorbet locally at Food Lion, for about $2.49 a pint. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
