TONIGHT

JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME follows his ``TimeCop'' hit with ``Street Fighter,'' inspired by the video and arcade game. The ``Muscles from Brussels'' plays a United Nations commando who leads a covert mission to rescue civilains from an evil warlord - the late Raul Julia in his last role. Also opening is ``Nell,'' with Jodie Foster making a bold Oscar bid as a North Carolina girl who has lived in the backwoods her entire life and speaks a language all her own. It co-stars Liam Neeson and his new wife Natasha Richardson.

SUNDAY

THE CHRISTMAS COMPETITION is hot and heavy at the movies this year, with four flicks opening Sunday. Walt Disney trots out a new, live-action version of ``The Jungle Book,'' with Jason Scott Lee running about in a loincloth. Robert Altman unveils ``Ready to Wear'' (``Prete-a-Porter''), his spoof of the Parisian fashion industry. The all-star cast includes Lauren Bacall, Sophia Loren, Julia Roberts, Lyle Lovett and Tim Robbins, who also stars as a mechanic who woos a mathematical genius (Meg Ryan) in ``IQ.'' He has help from Albert Einstein (Walter Matthau). Finally, Winona Ryder stars in a new version of ``Little Women.'' For an interview with Ryder, see Saturday's Daily Break.

TUESDAY

TAKING AIM at the funny bone, Tim Conway and Tom Poston arrive at Chrysler Hall Tuesday in ``Just for Laughs, a Day With Gates and Mills.'' The play, written by Conway, deals with a fictional comedy team that hasn't had a job since they insulted the emcee of a top-rated TV variety show two decades ago. Conway won four Emmys for his work on ``The Carol Burnett Show.'' Poston is a veteran of everything from ``The Steve Allen Show'' to ``Mork and Mindy'' to ``Newhart.'' Through New Year's Day. Tickets are $27 to $35; order at 671-8100. Call 441-2161 for information.

ANY DAY

CHESAPEAKE ARTIST Pat Kirby recently set aside her tapestry weavings in favor of a slightly less time-consuming medium - painting. Regional landscape is her subject, and she has been pursuing images of rolling fields and water lily-strewn ponds with a vengeance. A solo show of Kirby's recent paintings is on view through Dec. 31 at Art America, 141 Granby St. in downtown Norfolk. You can view them from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Free. Call 625-1888.
