The Rev. William Ridgway Petre, of the 300 block of Willow Valley Drive, died Dec. 21, 1994 at the Willow Valley Lakes Health Care Center, after an illness of five weeks. He was 88.
The Rev. Petre was the husband of Helen E. Hostetter Petre and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 19. Born in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late Rev. John C. Petre and Anna Ridgway Petre. The Rev. Petre was a pastor for 57 years with the United Methodist Church. He served in the Lancaster, Pa. area parishes of Millersville, Mount Joy, Hopewell, Hibernie, and Spring Garden Street. Next he was a chaplain of the U.S. Navy for 21 years serving in W.W. II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in 1967. Following his work with the Navy, the Rev. Petre served as a pastor for the Frances Asbury United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach until 1970. From there he served as associate pastor of Epworth United Methodist Church of Norfolk until 1986. In 1986 he moved to Willow Street, Pa. The Rev. Petre was a member of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania; the Lancaster Seminary; and the Temple University School of Theology. He is survived by his wife.
Services will be held at the West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 W. Willow Road, Willow Street, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994 at 10 a.m. There will be a viewing a half hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Millerville Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster, Pa.
