Donations totaling $27,000 have been divvied up among 10 youth-oriented charities by the Exchange Club of Virginia Beach.
Club president Robert W. Dedman handed out checks to representatives of each organization at a banquet last month.
The funds were raised by the 23-year-old club at an annual pig roast held last April at Camp Pendleton.
The organization is made up of local businessmen and civic leaders.
Recipients this year include:
The Boys and Girls Club of Hampton Roads, $5,000.
The Joy Fund, a charity sponsored by The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, $1,000.
EquiKids, a volunteer organization that offers therapuetic riding for disabled children, $4,000.
Mother Seton House, a shelter for troubled teenage girls, $1,000.
Jr. Sunwheelers, a volunteer program to help handicapped children, $3,250.
Virginia Beach Special Olympics, an organization that sponsors sports training and competition for mentally retarded children and adults, $4,000.
Red Cross Toy Fund, toys for youngsters who are disaster victims, $750.
Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening diseases, $4,000.
CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocate program, a volunteer program that aids troubled youngsters, $2,000.
Big Brothers-Big Sisters, an organization that provides adult companionship for children, ages 7 to 15, from single-parent homes.
The next pig and oyster roast will be held April 29 at Camp Pendleton, said Dedman. by CNB
