SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM IS INEQUITABLE

I've read and heard many arguments against cutting Social Security benefits, mostly from retired Americans who rightly believe they are due their investment of 30-40 years.

I am a 40-year-old white-collar employee who has contributed to Social Security since my first part-time job when I was 16, and continuously since I was 22 years old. However, when I calculate projected retirement income, I don't include Social Security.

Thanks in large part to the irresponsible Reaganite fiscal policies of the early '80s, which raided Social Security to pay for the national debt, my generation was left high and dry and will probably receive nothing from the tens of thousands of dollars we ``contributed.'' Today's retirees receive their full benefit.

A more equitable sharing of Social Security benefits is needed, regardless of the political dangers. Congress must act now to save our benefits, in spite of the AARP lobbying effort.

Are there any politicians in Washington with the backbone to implement the changes?
