IN THE COMMUNITY

A.C. Miller, president of Miller Oil Co. Inc., has been awarded the 1995 Exxon Community Service Award for his efforts on behalf of the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. The award, established in 1985, is the highest award presented to an Exxon distributor in the mid-Atlantic region and is given to those who dedicate their time and resources to help the community. Miller has served as chairman of the Children's Health Foundation board of directors and is chairmen of the Children's Health System board of directors.

Dianna Wolpert Starkey recently joined the Norfolk Convention & Visitors Bureau staff as a convention sales manager. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., Starkey holds two degrees in hospitality-related fields.

CAMPUS NOTES

Barbara J. Brickman, of the 300 block of Pender Court, has been inducted into the Golden Key honor society at James Madison University.

Meira Epplein Meek, daughter of Lawrence E. and Dianne D. Epplein of the 400 block of Westover Mews and a May 1994 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

Nick Jordan and Linda Trout-Jordan of Norfolk are the new co-chairs of the Virginia Wesleyan College Parents' Council, which serves as an advisory group to the college administration. They are the parents of Elyse Jordan, a junior at Virginia Wesleyan.

Rosemary Grosik, a guidance counselor at Ingleside Elementary School, won a $1,000 SMART grant titled ``Keys to the Treasure Chest'' to improve behavior in the school cafeteria. Students will be able to win coupons for good behavior and exchange them for school supplies.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Marine Pfc. Norman L. Barnes, son of Cathy D. Cooper of the 6500 block of Harvey Court, recently completed the administrative clerk course at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Barnes is a 1993 graduate of Granby High School. He joined the Marines in April.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Gordon L. Adkins, son of Catherine V. Suban of the 1000 block of Hugo St., recently was promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the dock landing ship Pensacola, the home port of which is Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek.
