SHEARIN'S ``FIRST FLIGHT'' SOARS TO TOP OF INTERNATIONAL ICARUS `94 ART SHOW

Anne Shearin of Kitty Hawk won First in Show in the International Icarus '94 Art Show, held in conjunction with the anniversary of man's first flight.

She won with a collagraph print titled ``First Flight'' featuring winged flyers of nature.

The show is the second of 10 that will culminate in 2003 at the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight. The show is named for the first flyer in Greek mythology, who soared so close to the sun thatthe wax holding wings to his body melted. Icarus plunged to his death in the sea.

The show attracted about 150 entrants from 19 states and Israel in visual art and literature. The show, which continues through Saturday at the Seaside Art Gallery and the Ghost Fleet Galley, both in Nags Head, was praisedfor its diversityby co-host Pat Eure.

Second in Best of Show went to Paris Trail from Edenton for a wood-carving, ``Nuptial Flight of Leopard Rays.'' Third place went to Charles Davis from Greenville for an abstract wood and concrete sculpture, ``Mensajero de Voelo.''

Fourth-place awards were shared by Betty Embry from Chesapeake, for an oil painting; Mathew Lindley of Brookline, Mass., for a computer graphics piece; Margo Aasland of Chesapeake, Va., for a pencil drawing; and Michelle Garrihy of Solon, Ohio, for a mixed media entry.

Florence Bianu of Haifa, Israel, won honorable mention in Best of Show for a mixed media work.

Five Excellence categories were awarded. In water color: Nancy Bulluck; sculpture: Nancy and Chris Nolan; photography: Jo Ann Kalfee; printmaking: Charles D. Jones; painting: Phebe Burnham.

Mary Kratt from Charlotte won first in literature for ``On the Chesapeake.'' Second went to Jeff Miles of Greensboro for two poems, ``Snow Angels'' and ``Entomology and related subjects.''

Two poets shared third place: Carol Porter Hayes of Charlotte, ``Sky Creatures,'' and Debra Kaufman of Mebane for ``Aunt Elizabeth's Angels.''

In the Children's Category featuring 29 entries, senior and junior youth awards were given. Senior first place went to Sean Lubeof Versailles, Ky., painting and handcrafted frame. Second place went to Justin Brown of Cape Hatteras for a collage, and third was won by Mercedes Tabano, sculpture and clay.

The junior award for first went to Kira Terjesen, First Flight Middle School, for a hanging construction. Second was taken by Stephen Harris, First Flight Middle School, for a water color. The winning entry in the Icarus exhibit is a collagraph print titled

``Fight Flight,'' by Ann Shearin of Kitty Hawk. Named for Icarus,

the mythological flyer, the show's theme is winged flyers in

nature.
