SALEM GIRLS TURN UP DEFENSIVE HEAT TO ROUT BAYSIDE, 46-19

Salem, unable to consistently score 60-points a game like last year's state championship squad, prides itself on playing 32 minutes of tenacious full-court man-to-man defense.

And Wednesday night, the Sun Devils (7-1) turned it up a notch higher. They held Bayside (3-4) to just seven field goals for a 46-19 victory in the second round of the Third Annual Salem Girls Christmas tournament.

``You've got to shoot to win and they didn't let us get in that position,'' Bayside coach Conrad Parker said.

Salem nailed 41 percent of its shots and jumped to 22-7 halftime advantage while Bayside, which shot a grisly 17.9 percent for the game, connected on just two-of-12 first half attempts from the field.

``I think tonight's defense won the game,'' Salem forward Kelly King said. ``Our defense, once we got the steals, set up our offense.''

King and point-guard Misty Colebank combined for six-of-eight Salem thefts which allowed the duo to work on their text book give-and-go game. Colebank hit King for eight of her game-high 19 points, while King assisted on six of Colebank's 10 points.

Salem guessed right on most of the Marlins' moves, too. The Sun Devils forced 14 turnovers that helped stump Bayside's game plan.

But the Marlins offensive fate was sealed when leading scoring Kristy Bryant got in foul trouble and sat most of the second half. She returned with 4:13 to go, only to pick up her fifth foul two minutes.

The Marlins also helped the Sun Devils to the charity line 11 times on 17 team fouls. leading scorer, Kristy Bryant, sat most of the second half with four fouls and picked up her fifth in the final quarter.

The tournament wraps up tonight when Salem takes on top-ranked Kempsville in the 8 p.m. championship round.

In other action, Churchland and Bayside will battle it out for third at 6 p.m. Great Bridge and Cox will vie for fifth place at 4 p.m. and Oscar Smith will meet Western Branch at 2 p.m. for seventh.
