W. CLYDE ABERNATHY

W. Clyde Abernathy, 60, a resident of Surry County, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1994, at Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill.

Mr. Abernathy was a native of Nottoway County and was the son of the late William Maxey and Bessie Hudson Abernathy. He was a member of Blackstone Baptist Church. He was employed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as a state special game warden, beginning his career in 1959 at Camp Pickett near Blackstone. In 1961 he became wildlife refuge supervisor at Hog Island Game Refuge in Surry County, where he was stationed until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Felts Abernathy; two daughters, Betty A. Brime of Charles City, Michelle A. Wiggins of Smithfield; three sons, William Clyde Abernathy Jr. and William Russell Clark, both of Wakefield, James William Clark Jr. of Wilson, N.C.; four sisters, Pauline A. Bishop and Josie A. Mayton, both of Blackstone, Margaret A. Norton of Crewe, Betty A. Hudson of Victoria; two brothers, Lawrence C. Abernathy of Blackstone and Irby Abernathy of Baltimore; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Charles City on Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Randy Haynes and the Rev. Ted Owen. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
