CAROL M. DAIL

Carol Miller Dail, mother, homemaker and active member of numerous civic and public service organizations in Harford County, Md., died Saturday, Dec. 3, of a genetic liver ailment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She had been in the Johns Hopkins Liver Transplant Program for several months but succumbed before an appropriate liver became available. She was 60.

Carol was born in Newport News, Va., and reared in Norfolk by her parents, the late Stanley R. and Ruth T. Miller. She attended Maury High School and the College of William and Mary, Norfolk Division, where she met her husband of 40 years, George Dail, a retired business executive, who will be better known to Norfolkians of the 1950's and 60's as ``Happy George Dail,'' the morning show host on WCMS Radio.

Carol and her family moved to Maryland in 1966. In 1977, she and her husband purchased and restored ``Winsted.'' Located on West Chapel Road near Level, Harford County, Md., ``Winsted,'' listed on the Federal Register of Historic Places and recorded in the Library of Congress, is one of the oldest houses in the county, and an excellent example of Federalist architecture built in the Georgian fashion, circa 1795. It was the featured house in the January 18, 1981 issue of The Baltimore Sun Sunday Magazine, but, not with standing its historical importance, under Carol's direction it became better known as a center of memorable social affairs and political fund-raisers.

One of Carol's hobbies was the collection of rare Christmas decorations. During the holiday season, ``Winsted'' was set ablaze with color and the annual celebrations, there, became a tradition with her family and friends and a joy to those who visited on the Historical Society of Harford County's Christmas House tours.

Carol was an active member of The Stepping Stone Museum, The Harford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, The Historical Society of Harford County, Inc., The AMC Cancer Research Center, The Harford County Republican Women's Club and The 2nd District Republican Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mary Miller Schwitters of Melbourne, Fla.; four children, G. Byron Dail of Charlottesville, Va., Stephen T. Dail who resides at ``Winsted,'' Adrienne Dail Earnshaw of Havre de Grace, Md. and Karen Dail Kelley of Charlotte Hall, Md.; and five granddaughters, Elizabeth Carey Earnshaw, Emily Dail Earnshaw, Julia Garrett Earnshaw, Margaret Miller Kelley and Frances Posey Kelley.

Because of Carol's interest in and love for Harford County and its heritage, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to The Historical Society of Harford County Inc., 143 N. Main St., Box 366, Bel Air, Md. 21014.
