HARRY M. DOGGETTE

Harry McLain Doggette, 63, of Newport News, died Friday, Dec. 30, 1994, after a short illness. Born in Pelzer, S.C., he had lived on the Peninsula since the early 1950s.

He had worked at WVEC Radio and TV for 20 years and was news director when he left in 1970 to work for the City of Hampton Commerce Department. Afterwards, he worked for the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority and then Fass Brothers and he joined WGNT-TV Channel 27 as director of operations about four years ago.

Mr. Doggette was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Newport News Rotary Club before becoming a charter member of the Oyster Point Rotary Club, which honored him by making him a Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in civic affairs for many years.

Scouting was a special love for Mr. Doggette who was assistant scoutmaster of Troop 158. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, a graduate of the Woodbadge Course and an active member of Woodbadge and, in 1988, he was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award.

Mr. Doggette is survived by his wife, Connie M. Doggette; daughter, C. Ellen Doggette of home; three sons, James Doggette Burton of Ashburn, Scott McLain Doggette and J. Lindsay Doggette, both of home; his mother, Gladys C. Proctor of Memphis, Tenn., and his father, Harry M. Doggett Sr. of Newport News; two brothers, Jim Hartsfield of Memphis, Tenn. and Joseph Smith of Detroit, Mich. and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hampton, by the Rev. Joel Meitz. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m Sunday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America Colonial Trail Council, 11725 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, Va. 23606.
