RAY S. BIRDSONG

Ray S. Birdsong, Ph.D., 59, of the 5000 block of Wellston Court, professor of Marine Biology at Old Dominion University for 27 years, died Jan. 1, 1995, in Norfolk.

Mr. Birdsong was born in Naples, Fla. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Xi and had also served 18 years as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica Burkhardt Birdsong of Virginia Beach; two sons, Michael Scott Birdsong and his wife, Paula of Lake Worth, Fla. and Vincent Stuart Birdsong of Tallahassee, Fla.; his mother, Frankie G. Watson of Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Terry Watson of Jupiter, Fla. and Jack ``Kip'' Watson of Big Pine Key, Fla.; and his stepmother, Hazel Birdsong of West Palm Beach, Fla.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Julia Dorsey-Loomis. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 4020 Llewellyn Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23504.
