DR. HENRY GRADY CARTER JR.

Dr. Henry Grady Carter Jr., 73, former chief anesthesiologist at St. Vincent DePaul Hospital, died at his Riverpoint home in Norfolk on Jan. 1, 1995.

Dr. Carter was born in Altanta, Ga. He entered the armed services as a Naval navigator, then transferred to the Marine Corps to become a Corsair fighter pilot during World War II.

After pre-med studies at Emory University, he graduated from the Medical College of Georgia, 1950, opened a family practice in Decatur, Ga., to practice general medicine for 11 years. He served as president of the DeKalb County Medical Society.

In 1962, he entered a two-year anesthesiology residency program at Swedish Hospital, Seattle, Wash., which he completed in 1964. After finishing a third year residency in anesthesiology at Burgerspital, Basel, Switzerland, Dr. Carter was named Director of Anesthesiology at Easton Hospital, Easton, Pa., where he practiced until 1971.

Dr. Carter moved to Norfolk, where he joined Anesthesiology Associates of Norfolk, a private medical practice. In Norfolk, Dr. Carter served as Chief of Anesthesiology at DePaul Hospital for several years before his retirement in 1983.

Dr. Carter is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judith Harris Carter of Norfolk; seven children, Thomas H. Carter, Henry G. Carter III, Dayle Carter, Robert W. Carter, Sandy B. Carter, William W. Carter and James M. Carter; and 10 devoted grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 5, 1995, at 11 a.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to The Salvation Army or The Union Mission.
