Finally, someone urges that we stop cutting funds to Virginia schools. Former Gov. Gerald Baliles recognizes the need to invest in the future of our commonwealth: Now if everyone else would just do the same (news, Dec. 19).
Politicians and the general public must also see how important it is to keep money in the schools and universities instead of taking it away.
Granted, there is wasteful spending in our schools from the elementary to the university levels. Unfortunately, when spending cuts are ordered, rarely do we see administrators looking to eliminate wasteful spending within their own departments; instead, academic programs, activities and teachers' jobs/salaries are put at risk or are abolished to make up the difference. The quality of education suffers and students end up paying the biggest cost of all - not to mention the society that will one day fall under their leadership.
