J. Hampton Roop, 79, of the 3900 block of North Road, a retired typewriter mechanic and warehouseman, died Jan. 2, 1995, in his residence.
He was born in Montgomery County, Va., and was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Elna Phelps McKenzie Roop; two daughters, Jeanine McKenzie Allen of Alexandria and Gayle McKenzie Barber of Richmond; two sons, W. Hunter Roop of Mocksville, N.C. and Geoffrey Roop of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Eva Shelor of Blacksburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Ian Roop of Centreville, Va., Leah Roop of Pittsburgh, Pa., Cheryl Salinas of Williamsburg, Britton Allen of Charlottesville, Robin Barber and Leslie Barber, both of Richmond; and a great-grandchild, Hans Lloyd Salinas of Williamsburg.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Trail Organization of the American Hiking Society, P.O. Box 20160, Washington, D.C. 20041.
