HE GOT CASE BECAUSE OF THE CALENDAR

The court's appointment of Tazewell T. Hubard III as John C. Salvi III's defense attorney was simply chance.

Hubard, a downtown Norfolk lawyer who has been practicing since 1968, has a solo law office across the street from the Norfolk courthouses. He specializes in family and divorce law.

Tuesday was Hubard's day as duty attorney at General District Court 6. Tuesday was also the day of John Salvi's arraignment.

The court keeps an alphabetical list of lawyers who will serve as court-appointed attorneys for defendants who cannot hire their own lawyers, court officials said.

In theory, each attorney is assigned a duty date for the month. In reality, however, the lawyers average one duty day every three months, court officials said.

Hubard has been a substitute judge in Norfolk's Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for 13 years, and a divorce mediator for the past 10 years. He is a former Norfolk prosecutor and former president of the Tidewater Alliance on Sexual Abuse. ILLUSTRATION: HIS LAWYER
