CONSOLIDATED FOODSERVICE SELLS ITS NESSON DIVISION

Consolidated Foodservice Companies L.P. has sold its Nesson Meat Sales division to a member of the family that founded it 78 years ago, the company announced Tuesday.

The sale, which became official Dec. 31, puts the the company in the hands of a company headed by Nesson President Robert A. Goldwasser. Goldwasser married into the Nesson family; brothers Yale and Mike Nesson founded the company in downtown Norfolk in 1917.

``It was a great opportunity for me to run my own business and have it back in the family,'' Goldwasser said Tuesday.

Virginia Beach-based Consolidated Foodservice bought the meat processor in June 1989. Two months later, Consolidated - owned by the Sandler family - sold a minority interest to Sara Lee Corp. Sara Lee in October announced that it was buying the Sandlers' majority interest in Consolidated.

``Sara Lee, I'm sure, wanted this to happen as badly as we did,'' Goldwasser said.

Nesson employs 55 people, and Goldwasser said none of those jobs would be affected by the purchase.

Nesson operates a meat-processing facility on 24th Street in Norfolk. The company provides meats to hotels and restaurants primarily in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia and North Carolina. by CNB
