A 61-year-old woman was killed Tuesday when her parked car jumped into gear and rolled over her.

Police said Effie R. McKelvene, of the 400 block of Knells Ridge Drive in Chesapeake, had left work in the 300 block of Campostella Road at 6:30 p.m. and was unable to start her car, a 1986 four-door Ford.

McKelvene opened the car's hood and managed to get the car started. She then slammed the hood down and was walking away when the car engaged in gear.

She tried to stop the car, but it rolled over her, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

McKelvene was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she died a short time later.
