Builders Square to stay at Virginia Beach location

San Antonio-based Builders Square will keep open its Virginia Beach store at 4725 Virginia Beach Blvd. ``as long as it continues to be profitable,'' company spokeswoman Jeanne Janes said. On Tuesday, the company announced it will close its Chesapeake store and three others in Northern Virginia. A story Wednesday incorrectly reported that all of the home-improvement chain's Virginia outlets would be closed. Janes said she did not know how long the Virginia Beach store would stay open. But if it remains profitable, it could be converted to a Builders Square II, which specializes in home improvement and decor. (Staff) Allstate cancels policies of 20,000 homeowners

To avoid paying claims if another big hurricane hits Florida, Allstate Corp. plans to cancel 20,000 homeowner policies in the Tampa Bay area. The homeowners, representing 10 percent of Allstate's customer base in the six-county area surrounding Tampa, will lose coverage on April 26. Allstate decided to cancel the policies because it can't afford to face another disaster like Hurricane Andrew, which ripped through South Florida two years ago, said a spokeswoman for the insurer. (AP) Dollar will rent cars to people who are disabled

People with disabilities will be allowed to rent cars from Dollar Rent A Car under an agreement reached Wednesday between the company and the Justice Department. Dollar agreed to end its policy of requiring that the person who paid the bill drive the car. The department's civil rights division said the policy prevented people who are disabled from renting a car even if a licensed companion was going to drive it. The agreement with Dollar is the second Justice Department settlement with a major car rental company in the past four months. In September, Avis Inc. agreed to provide hand controls for people with disabilities and to change payment policies similar to Dollar's. (AP) Baby crib recall

A California company has recalled 100,000 portable crib-playpens. At least four of the pens have collapsed unexpectedly, killing two babies, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. The playpens can appear to be set up properly even when their top rails are not locked into place. The playpens, manufactured by Baby Trend Inc. of Pomona, Calif., come in a variety of colors and three sizes: 40 inches by 40 inches, 40 inches by 28 inches and 31 inches by 41 inches. The words ``Home and Roam'' or ``Baby Express'' and ``Baby Trend'' appear on two of the four top rails. They cost from $60 to $130. About 100,000 were sold from 1992 to 1994 by several retailers, including Kmart, the commission said. (AP) by CNB
