YOU THINK IT'S COLD NOW? WAIT TILL TONIGHT

That chattering you hear is everyone's teeth. It's cold out there.

And it's going to get colder still tonight when the mercury is likely to dip to near 20 in Hampton Roads and near 10 toward Richmond.

Even a hint of a breeze could produce a wind chill factor in the teens locally and near zero inland.

``The dry, arctic air will remain with us through Thursday,'' said Mark P. DeLisi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Washington. ``Temperatures will moderate on Friday.''

In the meantime, dress warmly and don't leave the pets outside.

``People who will be outside . . . should wear plenty of layers of loose-fitting clothing. Cover your face and head,'' DeLisi said. ``Outdoor pets who were not bred to endure very cold weather should be brought indoors.''

The cold comes courtesy of a strong high pressure system over the middle of the nation on Wednesday. It was expected to build east into the Carolinas and Virginia by tonight.

``Very cold air is associated with the high,'' said Jan B. Price of the Weather Service office in Raleigh. ``The coldest temperatures so far this winter are likely tonight.''

The high pressure system should be centered over the Carolinas by tonight and is forecast to move offshore on Friday.

There is a chance of rain in western sections of the state, mainly in the afternoon. The rain may mix with snow at higher elevations in the mountains.

In Hampton Roads, today will be sunny and cold with a high around 30 and northwest winds at 10 to 15 mph. Tonight should be clear and cold with a low around 20 and light winds. by CNB
