Cox High scoring sensation Kim Miller has been named to the 16-member U.S. Field Hockey Association's Under-18 National Team, which was released Wednesday.
Miller said the shock of hearing her name called at the end of camp Saturday was overwhelming.
``You'd have thought I'd heard my name called for `The Price is Right,' '' said the junior.
Miller, who scored 50 goals in leading Cox to its sixth consecutive state title and a 21-0 record, is the only player from Virginia named to the team, which was selected after a five-day tryout camp involving 55 players last week at Rutgers University.
``This is like going to Yale where everyone was SCA president and valedictorian,'' said Cox coach Nancy Fowlkes. ``She went to the tryouts with all the other field hockey valedictorians, and she still found herself to be one of the best.''
Being named to the squad earns Miller a trip to the U.S. Olympic Festival, to be held in Denver in July.
Miller said she will now focus on making the U.S. Olympic team, targeting the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
``These women are the future of field hockey in the United States,'' National coach Pam Hixon said. ``They have all accomplished so much to reach this level, and we hope they will continue their improvement in the coming years.'' ILLUSTRATION: FILE photo
