HONORS AND AWARDS

Chesapeake City Councilman John W. Butt has been elected to serve a two-year term on the board of directors of the National League of Cities.

The league represents the interests of local governments in Congress, provides training workshops for members, works with the executive branch of the federal government on policies affecting cities, and publishes books and periodicals which focus on city issues.

The Chesapeake Marine Corps League recently recognized members for outstanding performances. Jim Hoadly, who saved a neighbor's life in 1993, received a second award for outstanding citizenship. Bill Butlin received the ``Marine of the Year'' award for leadership in starting the detachment and involvement in the organization.

The Deep Creek Ruritan Club took top honors for community service activities and was recognized during the Holland District Ruritan Convention, which includes 67 clubs in southeastern Virginia. The club placed first in the areas of business and professions, environment, publicity, social concerns and transportation; second in citizenship and patriotism; and honorable mention for public service.

The club's new officers are Roy Taylor, president; Robert Hewitt, vice president; Joe Gargaro, secretary; and Joe Noha, treasurer. Elected to the board of directors were Ed McFarland, one-year appointment; Mike Kirsch, two-year appointment; and Earl Waddell, three-year appointment.

The organization also recognized Kenneth Meads Sign Shop as Deep Creek's ``Business of the Year'' for assistance in publicizing and advertising fund-raisers.

The Chesapeake Police Department has won the 1994 John T. Hanna Award for outstanding achievements in the traffic safety activism. It was the third time the department received the award which is presented by Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety. Recipients are based on intensive traffic enforcement.
