SUFFOLK TRIES AGAIN WITH HARD-TO-HOLD PERSONNEL POSITION

Marie Alderman Dodson has been named the new personnel director for the city.

Dodson, 50, takes over for interim personnel director Dianne Whiting, who held the job for about five months. Before Whiting, the post was held for eight months by LaDonna J. Wade, who left in July to become personnel director for the Tribune Co. in Newport News.

Dodson will begin work in Suffolk on Jan. 17.

City Manager Myles Standish said the search for a new director took six months. The city received more than 100 applications.

``The personnel manager is one of the toughest jobs and one of the most important jobs,'' he said. ``The government isn't the buildings, the equipment and the vehicles we own. It's the people.''

Dodson will be responsible for hiring new employees and acting as liaison between city management and the approximately 600 workers. She will earn $45,000 a year.

Standish acknowledged the considerable turnover in the position recently, but said: ``I fully expect that Mrs. Dodson will have a long and successful tenure.''

Dodson, who plans to move from Chesapeake to Suffolk this year, said she has no immediate goals except an easy transition.

``I need to familiarize myself with the department and the responsibilities of the job,'' she said. ``But I'll be up to speed. I'm excited and ready to get to work.''

Dodson is the program manager for CHROME - Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in Engineering. Dodson has also worked as personnel director in the city of Clovis, N.M., and was an assistant professor of business management at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M.

She has been a personnel counselor at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany and taught English as a second language in Saudi Arabia.

Dodson holds a bachelor's degree in history from Norfolk State University and a master's degree in human resource/personnel management from the University of Utah.

She is married and has two adult sons.
