HOUSE BURNS

A three-bedroom home burned to the ground Thursday afternoon in this northern Outer Banks community.

No one was injured in the blaze, which took 45 firefighters more than three hours to quell. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.

``A neighbor called us about 12:55 p.m. and said she saw smoke coming from the house,'' Duck Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ron Meadows said. ``By the time we got there five minutes later, the entire structure was ablaze. The fire appeared to have started below the house, which was raised on pilings. The county's fire marshal plans to investigate tomorrow.''

The $160,000 house was a one-story beach box located at 130 Marlin Drive in the Saltaire subdivision of Duck. Its owners live elsewhere and vacation at the beach cottage, Meadows said. The fire chief said there is no suspicion of arson at this time.

Since the Saltaire subdivision does not have any fire hydrants, Meadows said firefighters had some difficulty stretching their hoses from hydrants on the next block. They did, however, manage to save a home next to the burned-down house which was threatened by the blaze. by CNB
