The School Board this week named E. Wayne Sykes principal of Salem High School.
Sykes has served since November as acting leader of the school, following the death of principal Ramona Stenzhorn during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Before that, he had served as an assistant principal at Salem since 1990.
``I'm very flattered by the confidence they (School Board members) have shown in me,'' Sykes said. ``It happened a little bit quicker in terms of a permanent appointment than I expected.''
Sykes said he appreciated the support he's received from staff members, students and parents.
``Basically, I'm just going to try to be deserving of the opportunity,'' he said.
