We support Sheriff McCabe 100 percent in his decision to prevent inmates at the Norfolk Jail from receiving their annual Christmas goody bags, worth $5 each, from the Salvation Army.
We do not place donations in the red Salvation Army kettles so that criminals may have a Merry Christmas. We do it so that those less fortunate than ourselves, such as underprivileged children and those who are homeless, can experience some joy at Christmastime.
Sheriff McCabe is not the bad guy here. He should be applauded for his courage in ending a tradition whereby the Salvation Army uses its resources to help criminals rather than those less fortunate who obey the law and really need its help.
