Two-time defending state Group AAA soccer champion Hylton High has again accepted an invitation to the Fifth Annual Beach District Kickoff Classic, which will be played March 31 and April 1 at Cox and Kempsville in Virginia Beach.
The Woodbridge-based school was ranked No. 1 in the nation two years ago after winning the 1993 boys state championship. Last year, the Bulldogs beat Cox in the state final, 4-0.
With Hylton in the field, the event boasts the last five state champions. Kempsville won in 1991 and 1992 and Cox won in 1990.
Kempsville coach Kevin Denson figures chances are good the 1995 state champion is in this field again.
``I would think Hylton is in line to three-peat,'' Denson said. ``If they don't, the winner is `To Be Announced.' I'm not that great a predictor.''
Salem, which lost to Hylton in the 1993 final, 1994 state semifinalist Manchester and Northern Virginia power Robinson are also in the field.
A tournament format has been scratched. The matchups are predetermined this year with the three local teams meeting the three out-of-towners, each team playing one Friday night game and two games on Saturday. Two of Friday's three games will be played at Kempsville High; all other games are at Cox.
RECRUITING UPDATE: It appears Hampton University's move to Division I-AA in football has caught the eyes of some of the area's top prospects.
Tallwood's John Vann, projected as a weak-side linebacker collegiately, is visiting Houston next week and will visit Hampton as well as Maryland and James Madison.
Also visiting Hampton and Maryland will be Indian River lineman Shawn Greene. Greene is awaiting SAT scores to learn if he qualifies under NCAA freshman eligibility rules.
Braves teammate Quintae McLean isn't projected to qualify, but the All-Tidewater linebacker will visit Hampton and Missouri and could end up going the junior college route.
Indian River tight end Jeremy Bridges has qualified and will visit Hampton and Army. He's also received feelers from James Madison, Wake Forest, Richmond and Rutgers.
Green Run quarterback Glenwood Ferebee has visited East Carolina and will visit Virginia Jan. 20. He also is considering Hampton.
Meanwhile, Cox defensive end Brian Wilson has visited Rutgers. He will also visit Delaware and is talking with James Madison and East Carolina.
THIS 'N' THAT: Chris Elmore, Green Run High's senior lefthanded pitcher, has been named one of the country's top 100 senior baseball players by ``High School Baseball USA,'' a nationally-recognized baseball magazine. . . . Three girls swimmers have floated to the top in Eastern District competition. Maury juniors Alison McPhee (50 and 100 freestyle) and Natalie Horsch (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) are unbeaten in the district in their specialties, as is Lake Taylor junior Kelley Harkins (200 and 500 freestyle). Look for Horsch and Harkins to meet in a showdown in the 500 on Jan. 19 at Maury. by CNB
