The arson investigation that led to the arrest of John C. Salvi III has resulted in unrelated charges against two men who allegedly torched an ATM outside the building where Hillcrest Clinic is located, police said Monday.
Police spokesman Larry Hill said the Christmas Day fire at an automatic teller machine outside the Navy Federal Credit Union had nothing to do with Salvi or abortion issues. Hill said the men accused over the weekend in the arson became angered at the machine and set the fire.
On New Year's Eve, arson investigator Ken Harlan was at the Bel Aire Building in the 1600 block of E. Little Creek Road, looking into the blaze, when someone fired into the lobby. Harlan followed the suspect's pickup truck and called for assistance. Salvi was arrested about three blocks away.
No one was injured in the shooting or the fire. Hill did not have a damage estimate.
Authorities said the men - identified by Navy authorities as Adrian Contreras of Houston and Anthony Catanzaro of Las Vegas - became angered during an ATM transaction, and then allegedly set the fire.
Investigators didn't say how the fire was started, or if it was set immediately after the transaction.
The suspects are 22 and 3rd class petty officers aboard the Norfolk-based attack submarine Finback, authorities said.
Salvi was arraigned Monday in Massachusetts on murder charges resulting from shootings at two clinics Dec. 30 in a Boston suburb. Five other people were wounded in the Massachusetts shootings. MEMO: See related story/A6
