U.S., Japan reach accord on flat-glass market access

Japan and the United States have reached a final agreement on increasing foreign access to Japan's flat-glass market. The United States said that the three Japanese producers that dominate the market enforce exclusive sales contracts on most domestic wholesalers. American flat-glass makers have more than 25 percent of the European and Latin American markets, but less than 1 percent of the Japanese market. Under the pact announced Monday, Tokyo will undertake model projects to promote the use of safety glass and dual-pane glass for heat insulation. Microsoft Corp. said it will offer a software program that will correct the long-division functions of Intel Corp.'s Pentium microprocessor. The software giant will release the free program in the second half of January to prevent the Pentium chip from wrongly executing division problems. Other computer companies that are releasing programs to fix the problem including Compaq Computer Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. Intel, Pentium's developer, acknowledged in November that the chip has a flaw. The company has offered to replace the faulty chip for customers. The software programs watch the operations of the Pentium and correct any inaccuracies, but they slow down the mathematical computations of the computer. The flaw doesn't affect the normal operations of a PC, but gives incorrect results occasionally during intensive mathematical calculations. (Bloomberg Business News) Drexel Heritage to close Richmond furniture store

One of Richmond's true manufacturers' outlet stores, The Drexel Heritage Furnishings Inc. store, will close by mid-March.

The company operates another outlet in Hickory, N.C. Drexel Heritage Furnishings opened the Richmond store in April 1991 to help get rid of its overstock merchandise, dealer returns and seconds that it was storing at warehouses in North Carolina.

The company said lack of merchandise forced the closing. (AP) by CNB
