A Steinway grand piano that has been a cornerstone of the Whalehead Club restoration program is now in the hands of the experts.
A special team of piano movers came to the former Corolla hunt club last week to transport the 92-year-old piano to a restoration lab in New York.
The piano project is being funded by the Corolla Business Association, which raised a majority of the $20,000 improvement project from its Fourth of July Celebration. The studio piano, originally bought for $2,500, will be worth more than $100,000 when restored.
Jerry Stott, a Whalehead Club guide, has led the piano restoration effort and last year hosted a visit from Steinway historian David Grossi.
The dark mahogany piano was ordered specifically for Madame M. Banat of Philadelphia in 1902 and delivered in April 1903.
