INJURED YOUTH IMPROVES

A Chowan County boy attacked by a next-door neighbor's Rottweilers was released Tuesday from Chowan Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Joshua Rae, 5, of Tyner was seriously injured by the three dogs on Sunday when he and two other children were walking to a friend's house and passed the home of Ray Wheeler, owner of the dogs.

The boy suffered cuts and puncture wounds to his head, ear and hand in the attack and required surgery. Rae's cousin and another girl, who were with him, were not hurt, police said.

The dogs are being held under a mandatory 10-day quarantine at the Chowan Animal Control Shelter.

``We're talking with a magistrate,'' Chowan County Sheriff's Deputy Harry Ward said Tuesday. ``The dogs have not been ruled as dangerous animals, so I don't know if he can bring criminal charges.

``But I'm pretty sure they will be (labeled dangerous) now,'' he said.
