3 ADMIRALS ARE CHOSEN TO ECHL ALL-STAR GAME

Center John Porco, right wing Rick Kowalsky and defenseman Ron Pascucci will represent the Hampton Roads Admirals in the ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 24 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

They were named to the East Division's second team in voting by coaches and the media. Players from Birmingham, South Carolina and Tallahassee of the Southern Division were eligible for the East All-Star squad.

Charlotte, Dayton and Wheeling also had three All-Stars apiece. The other 14 teams had two or fewer.

``We were pleased to get three,'' Admirals coach John Brophy said. ``We could have had more, but it's great for the team to have three. It's a credit to all of our players.''

Admirals' officials expressed disappointment that defenseman Chris Phelps didn't make the team.

``Phelps has had a good year. I thought he would have made it,'' Brophy said. ``But you can't have the whole All-Star team.''

They were also surprised that Charlotte's Darryl Noren will start ahead of Porco, who with 50 points is fifth in the ECHL in scoring.

``I would think somebody who's neutral, who doesn't have any affiliation with either player, would judge that John Porco is the better player,'' assistant coach Al MacIsaac said. ``But overall, this is a good showing for the Admirals. We're happy.''

Two former Admirals also made the All-Star team. Roanoke's Dave Gagnon will start in goal for the East, and Charlotte's Shawn Wheeler is the third-line left wing.

The All-Star coaches won't be named until next week. by CNB
